At our school, we teach the NSW curriculum and offer many different subjects to support each student’s learning. We know that development of skills in literacy and numeracy are the building blocks for learning and for everyday life. Religion and ethics
At Charlestown South Public School, students can take part in special religious education (SRE) or special education in ethics (SEE), depending on availability. These classes are delivered by authorised teachers from approved providers.
Enrolment and changing your preference
During enrolment, parents and carers can select from the SRE and SEE options currently available at our school.
After enrolment, parents and carers may change their child’s preference at any time by completing our online SRE and SEE preference form in School Bytes here or notifying the school in writing.
Students will continue in the same arrangement from year to year unless a parent or carer requests a change.
The following Scripture classes are provided
- Combined Christian SRE
- Ethics (Stage 2 only – limited places)
Students who select not to attend scripture participate in alternative meaningful activities.
Combined Christian SRE
Combined Christian SRE is delivered by authorised and trained teachers from different Christian denominations and churches.
The approved providers in our Combined Christian SRE arrangement are:
- Baptist Union of NSW
- Australian Christian Churches
- Presbyterian Church of Australia (NSW)
- Uniting Church in Australia (NSW Synod)
The authorised curriculum currently used is GodSpace Purple 2026. The curriculum provides age-appropriate opportunities for students to explore Christian beliefs, Bible stories, values and questions about life.

Special education in ethics
SEE is provided by Primary Ethics, the approved provider of special education in ethics in NSW public schools.
Ethics classes support students to develop their ability to make well-reasoned decisions about ethical issues. Through stories, scenarios and respectful discussion, students learn to listen to others, give reasons for their views, consider different perspectives, and disagree respectfully.
Trained volunteer teachers impartially facilitate discussions without imposing a particular moral viewpoint.

Alternative meaningful activities
Students who do not attend SRE or SEE are supervised by school staff in a separate space and participate in alternative meaningful activities. These activities may include reading, private study, or completing homework.
Academic instruction, formal school activities, and extracurricular activities are not provided during the time allocated to SRE and SEE.
